Koperkasa may adopt member's disabled children

KUCHING: Koperasi Koperkasa Sarawak Berhad is looking into the possibility of ‘adopting’ the disabled children (OKU) of their members by giving financial aid for education and other purposes.

Koperkasa chairman Alif Bacha Madarshah said their Welfare and Community sub-committee would carry out a survey of their 24,000 members to find out those who qualify for the aid.

“This is a Koperkasa projects with funds contributed by members,” he said, adding that members could contact the sub-committee to notify if they have disabled children.

He was speaking to reporters yesterday after leading the sub-committee a visit to Sarawak Cheshire Home.

The group treated the 67 residents of the home a KFC lunch besides bringing the gift hampers.

Alif said they hope to make this festive visit a yearly event.

“It’s time to look beyond the co-operative to the community around us,” he said, adding that yesterday outing was their first charitable project outside the co-op.

Also present were Sarawak Cheshire Home matron Sister Regina Lanchau and home management chairperson Datin Lianney Chia.

Koperkasa, established 1949, is a co-op consisting mainly of civil servants. It offers special services like loans, sales of furniture and electrical goods through Koperasi Shoppe.

The Welfare and Community Funds under the Welfare and Community sub-committee was set up to see the welfare of Koperkasa members.
